British Empire Medal to return

To mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that the British Empire Medal (that was scrapped nearly 20 years ago) will be revived.

It is to be awarded to local heroes by the lord-lieutenant of their county or a local authority in recognition of the dedication and hard work to their communities. Those awarded a BEM will be entitled to attended a Buckingham Palace garden party with others whose work has been recognised.
